Two comments and a generalization.
- The PMI is a scan tool. You adjust your mental filter to perceive what is good in a situation. A minute later, reset the filter to collect the bad. And readjust to see what is neither good nor bad, but interesting.
- this be done in groups.
- can practice. Take approximately 3 minutes on each PMI. Theme: "oil price is multiplied by five" , "all inhabitants of planet have mobile phone ", " do a PMI every day for a week ".
- If you practice, you will find it very fast, very easy to do, and applicable to all situations. It becomes automatic and unconscious. I have a new situation, or a new idea, and say "ah, yes, but, and also ..." .
- will say it is like to "see pros and cons", and true. And it goes further. There are important differences, you can see for yourself.
Recently I have much interest in another type of "scanning tools". I have translated SCIM of Vinay Gupta (see SCIM), and I'm thinking how to make it operational for some kind of catastrophic situations.
- SCIM creates a vocabulary. 6 people have basic needs. Teams, organizations and states have their own vital needs. You can make a quick scan, and make sure that you miss anything important. Example
- . The Dalai Lama says he leaves the political leadership of Tibet, so that the next leader to be democratically elected. Vinay did a quick scan and wrote: "how will they know who may or may not vote?" . One of the state needs is to have some kind of census of its inhabitants. (In the Sahara may have a similar problem.)
- As with PMI, the scan can be very fast, and if you've practiced above may even be unaware . (In his case it was.)
Generalization:
- scanning tools make people look more intelligent. reality allow us to explore in greater depth, breadth and detail. Enable us to collaborate quickly and flexible, focusing on the matter at hand at all times.
- The circumstances are increasingly demanding. After decades of exponential growth, in 2011 we saw "explosions of change" on many fronts. Things may stabilize, but it can happen to follow complicated.
- scanning tools, if sufficiently simple, can become unconscious.
